Light enough for travel and durable enough for backpacking, the RAB Latok Alpine Jacket is the only hardshell you'll ever need. The eVent fabric is the secret to having a waterproof jacket that can breathe. A plastic bag is waterproof but doesn't breathe, and if you wore a plastic bag hiking or skiing you would suffocate from the heat, but depending on which tests you believe, eVent is one of - if not - the best materials for breathability. A helmet compatible, 2-way adjustable hood allows you to use this jacket year-round for any activity. It's a midweight 3-layer jacket which is a great compromise between the light but thin and heavy mountaineering options. This is a top-end jacket with well thought out technical details including zipper placement, pocket size, fit, and a cut that goes several inches below the waist. The outside pockets can carry a 1 liter plastic soda bottle without the zippers interfering with backpack, waist or chest straps. Best of all, it was about $75 cheaper than any comparable eVent jacket at last check; and there's a women's specific version.
