Pictures of Morocco: Marrakech, Ait Benhaddou, Atlas Mountains, Meknes, Asilah, Rabat, Sale|
Ait Benhaddou Kasbah PicturesKasbahs are desert castles of North Africa built by the local Berbers. The town of Ait Benhaddou, Morocco has a large grouping of well maintained mud-brick kasbahs; thanks to the many movies filmed here, including Lawrence of Arabia. Located near Ouarzazate, it's an acient town that was known before movies due to its location along a major Sahara caravan route. |
Marrakech, Morocco PicturesFamous landmarks of the ancient city include the medina, the old town surrounded by a wall which contains a maze of narrow streets and souks (markets). At the center of the medina is the Place Djemaa el Fna, a large open square which comes to life at dusk. |
Meknes, Morocco PicturesOne of the imperial cities of Morocco, Meknes is more mellow than its famous neighbor of Fes. But, it has similar souks, medieval gates and walls, and craft guilds inside the medina (old town). See the famous Bab Mansour and other gates of the wall that surrounds the original city. |
Atlas Mountain Trek PicturesPictures of our Atlas Mountain trek in Morocco. We started in Skoura, outside of Ourzazate, on the south side of the Atlas Mountains. Then we hiked and hitched rides north as we crossed the mountains among remote Berber villages. Our route took us just west of Ighil Mgoun, the second highest mountain in Morocco. |

Rabat, Morocco PicturesSee Kasbah des Oudaias and its famous gate, Bab Oudaia. This fortress at the intersection of the ocean and river protected the city of Rabat. At the other end of the city, at the south edge is Chellah. An ancient city, its ruins include well preserved walls and towers and a relaxing garden with a variety of flowering plants. |
Asilah, Morocco PicturesThis is a beach town located an hour south of Tangier, Morocco. A Portugese built castle/medina and tidy homes in the small town welcome visitors. Inside the medina, narrow cobblestone streets are only wide enough for pedestrians. An International Festival is held here every August. |
