Photos of Hoi An, Vietnam. Hoi An is located in the middle of Vietnam, 4 hours drive (with stops) from Hue. This town was an important trading port in the 16th and 17th centuries and is a UNESCO World Heritage site today. Although touristy, it's still pleasant to stay here for a few days. Many ancient merchant homes of Japanese and Chinese influence remain. These buildings are long and narrow with a shop in front, courtyards, private living quarters, and back doors or docks on the water for bringing in goods. There are many assembly halls, which the Chinese built for social and religious gatherings of their communities. Pictured here are the assembly halls of Phuc Kien (1757) and Trieu Chau (1887). Hoi An is famous for tailors. It seems like half the shops in town are tailors. You can have a quality suit or dress or any other garment you can imagine made overnight. Tasty food abounds here, like the rest of Vietnam. One of Hoi An's local specialities is Cao Lau, a noodle soup with pork.
